I Might Be Dead

As I briefly mentioned, my boyfriend, Taylor, is an exercise science program graduate student. He loves working with athletes to make them stronger, faster, and more agile. Needless to say, he is always letting me know why the workouts I'm doing are not very effective and why the plans he could design for me would yield more results. If it sounds annoying, that's because it is, but I can't blame the guy. He definitely knows what he is talking about.

One of the latest methods Taylor keeps raving about is high intensity interval training. It's all about fast bursts of all out energy, followed by a short rest or less intense activity, then right back into that all out burst (and repeat). These workouts will DEFINITELY tire you out if done properly, but will burn more calories in 15 minutes than I could running on a treadmill for 30 minutes or an hour.
STORY TIME: 
Earlier this week, Taylor and I were watching The Biggest Loser and there was a scene where a contestant was pushing herself REALLY hard during her workout. She was making the stank-faces, grunting, etc... Taylor turned to me and said that was how hard I should be pushing myself during my workouts. I said "Excuse me! You're not even with me at the gym! How do you know I'm not pushing myself that hard?!"

From past experience, I know why he would think that. I have a tendency to give up quickly at workouts when they start to hurt too much. He would always tell me to just push through it, I'd gasp for air while telling him to bite me (we really do love each other), and we'd go along our merry way.

Anyway, he responded with something to the affect of, "Oh so if I gave you a workout to do this week, you'd do it and not quit?" Being my father's daughter, I took it as a challenge and refused to let him win. I said yes, and the gauntlet had official been thrown!

Last night I was bored at the gym, so I cut it short and came home and told Taylor I was ready to do his workout. He said it would only take 15 minutes. Easy peasy, right? OH HELL NO!

Y'all, that was the hardest workout I have EVER done in my life! Granted I haven't really done THAT many workouts previously, but seriously I was probably 3x more tired after that 15 minutes than I was after any of the 5k's I have done. I was gasping for air the entire time, making those same stank-faces the girl from The Biggest Loser was making, and you could have probably filled a cooler with all the sweat that was pouring from my face. And to make myself sound even more pathetic, Taylor let me take it a little easy!



I don't want to discourage anyone from trying it because although it was very difficult, I pushed through it for once in my life and I felt SO accomplished when I finished. I'm also being driven by the idea that if I keep doing this, it will just get easier and easier.

So here I am to share with you the workout I just completed. If you're not sure what some of the moves mean, I will be posting pictures of me doing them all on Sunday. I apologize for not having them today, but I just didn't think about it...I was too busy trying to decide if I was dead or not.

Michelle's Cardio HIIT Workout:
Lunges: 45 seconds (Rest 15 seconds)
Switch Feet: 45 seconds (Rest 15 seconds)
Jumping lunges: 45 seconds (Rest 15 seconds)
Knee pulls: 45 seconds (Rest 15 seconds)
Jump knees to chest: 40 seconds (Rest 20 seconds)
Squats: 40 seconds (Rest 20 seconds)
Squat jumps: 40 seconds (Rest 20 seconds)
Wide run: 45 seconds (Rest 15 seconds)
Side lunges: 45 seconds (Rest 15 seconds)
Ski Jumps: 45 seconds
Rest: 60 seconds
(The following moves are done without a break to rest in between)
Mountain climbers: 60 seconds
Side hops: 60 seconds
Burpees: 60 seconds
Fast run: 60 seconds
